〈 CHARACTER INFO 〉
CHARACTER NAME: Peridot
CHARACTER AGE: Less than 5000, but probably more than 500.
SERIES: Steven Universe
CHRONOLOGY: Post-Change Your Mind
CLASS: Hero
HOUSING: Randomized with roommates!
BACKGROUND:
Peridot comes from a world that has been effectively changed by the presence of extraterrestrial colonizing lifeforms called "Gems"- sentient, powerful gemstones who can create hard light bodies for themselves. All gems are servants of the Diamond Authority who rule over the colonies. Earth was one such colony, though it was abandoned after a Gem Civil War led to the supposed "death" of Pink Diamond. In retaliation for a failing war, the remaining Diamonds sent a corruption wave to destroy the remaining gems on Earth, leaving only four unmolested. These four became the last of the Crystal Gems.
Peridot comes into the story five thousand years later as a representative of Homeworld sent to check on the "Cluster"- a gem geoweapon created by the Diamonds during the war by utilizing the fused shards of billions of shattered gems. Peridot's plans are routinely thwarted by the Crystal Gems, leading to her returning to Earth with Jasper, a militant and powerful Quartz. Her plans, once again, fall through, and she ends up stranded on Earth, unable to get in touch with the Gem Homeworld and doomed to a terrible fate as she believes the Cluster will emerge within a short period of time. She is eventually captured by the Crystal Gems after repeated encounters with them and is released by Steven Universe, son of the former Crystal Gem leader Rose Quartz (actually Pink Diamond in disguise), who attempts to appeal to her with kindness in order to convince her to share information about the Cluster. This leads to Peridot reluctantly working with the Crystal Gems in order to destroy the Cluster.
Peridot steals a direct line to the Diamonds while on a mission to Pink Diamond's moon base and Steven mistakenly believes (because Peridot is bad at communicating) that she's trying to contact her superiors to continue their plans for the destruction of the earth. After a struggle, she manages to contact Yellow Diamond where she tries to appeal to her matriarch about the value of life on earth, but she is rebuffed so severely that Peridot loses her temper and calls her a "clod." This leads to her becoming a full-fledged rebel and a Crystal Gem, herself.
Through her experiences on Earth, she grows and begins to distance herself from her indoctrination as a Homeworld Gem, learning to express herself in new ways, learning that she has the ability to bend metal to her will, and making new friends. All of this eventually culminates into the Diamonds coming to Earth themselves in order to wipe out the rebels once and for all. Peridot challenges Yellow Diamond, herself, and ends up destabilized for her troubles, but she returns in the final battle boasting the stars of the Crystal Gems and is present for Steven finally appealing to the Diamonds and changing the course of history, leading to a time of peace and a change in the fascist matriarchy of Homeworld.
PERSONALITY:
As technicians responsible for the Kindergartens (the "factories" which all gems are made in), Peridots are all manufactured to be intelligent, adaptable, curious, and above all, able-minded problem-solvers. This particular Peridot is all of those things, plus a Napoleon complex to rival that of the actual Napoleon, and a hair-trigger temper.
As a technician, she responds best in situations that are easily solved with computers, engineering or just brains, in general. She's extremely clever and determined to a fault- when she sets her mind on something, she won't give up until she solves it, even if she has to whine for a little while about why she can't, until she can obtain a new perspective on it. On the rare occasion she honestly can't solve a problem, especially if it's a big one, she falls apart quickly, turning panicky and anxious.
At the core of her being, Peridot possesses a deep and (sometimes almost childlike) curiosity about everything, never ceasing to ask questions or trying to understand something, even if she's complaining about it. She wants to know the purpose behind everything and even her more inane activities seem to require some thinking- she seems to be heavily involved in "fandom analysis" ever since becoming a fan of the in-universe teen drama Camp Pining Hearts and her understanding of music and art seems to be more technical, though she's starting to dabble more into unconventional metaphor and self-expression without expecting everything to have a literal purpose.
Due to being poorly socialized and never having cultivated natural empathy, she can often come off as insensitive and blunt to a fault- she doesn't lie or sugarcoat things (unless she, herself, believes the lie), and will state facts with little regard to how those facts might affect the people around her.
However, her capacity for wanting to learn and understand means that while she may be frustrated or confused by emotional outbursts to the things she says, she wants to learn how (and, more importantly WHY) she should correct the behavior. As such, to the people she's closest to, she's actually become a little more aggressive in protecting their feelings, often stepping in to defend them from even minor insensitive comments.
Peridot exhibits a great deal of self-aggrandizing behaviors that seem to fluctuate between things she genuinely believes to things she says to make herself feel better. She does genuinely think she's hot stuff and should be respected and praised, but at the same time, she craves that validation so much that it's pretty clear that for all that she's full of herself, she wants and needs to hear it from others too, as she wants to be useful or, at the very least, included. Even though she's a temperamental, insulting little thing, she has something of a need-to-please attitude, and when someone is shown to be angry or even cross with her, her determination kicks in again and she will go to extraordinary lengths to make them forgive her. At the same time, if anyone expresses any satisfaction about any side of her personality, she will ham that aspect up until it ceases to be charming, such as when Amethyst told her she was "funny."
Early in her appearances, she's quick to put down others for their flaws or low status in order to build herself up as the superior gem- this is understandable, because of Homeworld's strict caste system, it's likely she is a mid-tier gem at best and subject to the same level of fantastic racism and lashes out at lower class or gems she sees as "defective" to make herself feel like a higher class of gem. Eventually, she learns that this is Not Okay, and that she really isn't any better than any of the Crystal Gems, herself, though she is still quick to put down strangers.
Her temper is her most noteworthy aspect, after her ego. Peridot is shown to get mad and frustrated over the most trivial of inconveniences and calls everyone around her who happens to annoy her a "clod." Due to having a poor ability to express herself and relying heavily on logic and facts to support her, rage and tantrums are her only effective way of showing her dissatisfaction and venting her pent up frustration. Fortunately, her tantrums aren't destructive, just loud and often belligerent. She often has to scream herself out until a patient soul gets her to approach a situation differently.
POWER:
Gem Traits— Though Era II Peridots have no "powers" like shapeshifting and (presumably) weapons, they still have some traits that occur throughout all gems.
Peridot is virtually indestructible, so long as her gem remains undamaged. If her “physical body” becomes too damaged, she “poofs” back into her gem where she can safely reform. If the gem becomes damaged or broken, then her reformation will either be incomplete or corrupted or she’ll die. As a Peridot, she is more durable than an average gem and thus far it has taken the power of a Diamond and a fusion gem to actually cause her to destabilize.
Her gem functions as a flashlight.
Ferrokinesis — She can manipulate metal at will, though this seems to be closer to a "magnetic" sort of manipulation as she can repel and attract metal to her, but can't seem to actively bend or change it in any way. She has been shown to be able to lift trucks over her head and throw them with minimal effort.
Glamour — (non-canon) Similar to a Disguise Self spell (without the time limit), Peridot can make herself appear human (specifically a human teenager due to her size), though this is merely an illusion, and it becomes obvious upon physical contact. It is primarily used for stealth and blending in. Her glamour can also be used on Pumpkin to disguise her as a normal dog, but it cannot extend further than that.

[Hey, look there's a weird sassy green child on the network. She looks particularly smug.]
Greetings. I am Peridot, Savior of Homeworld, and while this abduction into this strange alternate Earth is unprecedented and, frankly- [she makes a face] -annoying... as a Crystal Gem, it's my mission to defend Earth. Even an Earth that isn't mine. I guess.
[Look, she's trying to make the most of it. She pauses, considering.] It must be because I'm just so good at protecting Earth. We're effectively in peace talks now and things are working out for the better, so I must be needed elsewhere. Hah! And this Earth must have needed me the most. Yes! That has to be it. You're fortunate to have gotten me. The rest of you so-called heroes and protectors can stand back and watch as I reveal my brilliance!
[She gets a full nyeh-heh-heh laugh going before she cuts herself off, mumbling to herself.] Oh. Hm. I should really look into what all this "alternate Earth" stuff really means for the greater universe.

Fortunately, her tantrums aren't destructive, just loud and often belligerent. She often has to scream herself out until a patient soul gets her to approach a situation differently.
Barge Reactions: Peridot's gonna be interested in being back on a ship again and will likely try to stick her nose in things, critique its make and model, and generally throw her weight around with everyone (don't worry- she weighs very little) because she is the great Peridot. Floods may be a bit more crisis-mode for her, as she's never greatly experienced anything that could alter her beyond... her redemption arc and that's a little traumatizing, but she'll bounce back quickly. She's bound to be insufferable to most people, but she's also insatiably curious and learns quickly and since she can't handle the idea of being disliked by her allies, she'll be over the top in making sure people adore her.
For her Inmate, she'll teeter between being overbearing and know-it-all at first, but will probably try to reach them through friendship and understanding after a point, because that's how she was taught. She just might take a moment to get over her impatience when that doesn't work at first.
Deal: Restoration of the earth in the Prime and Beta kindergartens on Earth to enable life there again.

Sample Journal Entry:
[Behold, Peridot, in all her glory. Kamina glasses and everything. She is beauty. She is grace.
She's about to shove her ego in her face.]
Greetings. I am Peridot, Savior of Homeworld, and leader of the Crystal Gems. [NO ONE IS GONNA DISPUTE HER. SHE CAN SAY WHAT SHE WANTS.] I'll be joining you on this bizarre space craft as a Warden, and I plan to take it very seriously, as someone who has gone through the process of "redemption" and risen up as a new and improved gem.
One of you lucky Inmates will get the chance to bask in my luster and learn from what I've experienced. And while I can only take one of you at a time- even though I know I could redeem multiple persons at once- rest assured that you'll be redeemed in no time under my guidance.
[And that concludes this egocentric broadcast.]

Eventually, she learns that this is Not Okay, and that she really isn't any better than any of the Crystal Gems, herself, though she is still quick to put down strangers, even if her insults are milder now.
